Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act (HTA) includes more than 500 offences police can cite you for when issuing a traffic ticket in Mississauga. That’s right, over 500 offences. And in the City of Mississauga, traffic tickets are such a profitable business that we’d guess their officers have issued tickets for all of them.
The paralegals of Legal Action have helped thousands of local motorists fight many types of City of Mississauga traffic tickets. However, we cannot yet claim to have mounted a defence against all 500-plus Ontario HTA offences. Given the increasing number of traffic tickets in Mississauga, our paralegals are constantly exposed to more complex speeding offence cases.
No matter the offence cited on your traffic ticket in Mississauga, it will take a bite out of your wallet unless you successfully mount a defence against it.
Traffic offence fines start at $35, with a few obscure laws against “clinging” to a vehicle while it’s in motion, walking on the wrong side of a highway, and others. Scheduled set fines under the HTA can set you back up to $600 depending on the offence, while non-set penalties can run up to $1,000 or more.
Other than speeding and other significant moving violations, most fines for City of Mississauga traffic tickets tend to range between $85-$300.
However, fines may not be the most consequential possible impact of a traffic ticket in Mississauga. Most moving violations impose demerit points on your Ontario driving record if you’re convicted (admit guilt by paying the fine or found guilty of the offence in traffic court). If those demerit points add up, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation will issue you written warnings and suspend your license when the point total exceeds 15 (nine for new drivers and holders of special driver’s licenses).
Even if those points don’t add up enough to result in license suspension, they will bite you. Ontario insurance companies hike premiums based on demerit points and aggressively boost them on drivers with moving violations.
Careless driving tickets served to drivers have been steadily increasing over the years throughout the province of Ontario, especially in Mississauga. The initial surge in careless driving tickets caused an amendment to the Highway Traffic Act’s penalties for careless driving tickets to increase.
The penalty for careless driving in Mississauga, and the rest of Ontario range from no less than $400 and no more than $2000, as well as potential imprisonment of no more than 6 months. A driver can receive both a monetary fine and imprisonment depending on the details of the incident.
Demerit points are also added to a driver’s license if a driver is convicted of a careless driving ticket. 6 demerit points will be added, and additional demerit points may be added if other offences were committed. In the instance a court decides to suspend the offending driver’s license, no additional demerit points will be added after the careless driving offence.
Hiring expert legal representation for Mississauga traffic tickets is often necessary for lowering penalties or even avoiding them altogether. The complexities of traffic law and the potential repercussions demand the expertise of a seasoned professional.

Phil is good at his work. My wife had two tickets which we had filed and missed the court dates for but Phil somehow got them reopened for an upcoming date and had one of them withdrawn due to lack of evidence and we're waiting on the second court date. Fingers crossed! Highly recommend Phil.
